Meredith Village Savings Bank Fund awards grant to Mirror Lake Protective Association.

TUFTONBORO, NH —- The MLPA applied for a Watershed Restoration Grant from the NH Department of Environmental Services last week. Funds for these grants are appropriated through the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. The MLPA’s preliminary application is for $90,000 of which 40% is required to be “matched” by the MLPA through cash, services and volunteer hours (at a matching, or “credit rate”, of $20.25/hr). According to MLPA President Dusty Davies, “This is a two-step process. Our initial application is for fact-finding and also involves some preliminary remediation work. If the outcome of this research indicates that more costly remediation efforts will be required, the MLPA will have to file for another grant, hopefully next year, to fund those efforts. All of this, and more, is covered in the grant application, in more detail.”

Bear sightings!

Bear sightings around Mirror Lake are becoming more common. NH Fish and Game advises taking down bird feeders; firmly securing trash containers; thoroughly cleaning grills; and not leaving food of any kind in cars, sheds, decks etc. Keep doors and windows locked at night and when you leave the house. Bears will avoid ammonia soaked rags and loud noises such as clanging pots and pans, airhorns, yelling, clapping and such.
